In December 1967, the Department of Commerce was set up as a separate department by carving it out of the composite Department of Economics and Commerce, Delhi School of Economics. This was done in order to cope with the rapid expansion and the growing importance of business education in the country. DSE was established in 1949 at the initiative of Prof. V.K.R.V.Rao, as an institution for advanced studies and research in Economics, with the Department of Economics (and Commerce) as its nucleus. A decade later, three other Social Science departments viz Sociology, Geography and Business management were added.
Department of Commerce has been a part of the cluster of four social science departments collectively known as the Delhi School of Economics (DSE). The saga Department of Commerce, is filled with stories of institutional pride essentially rooted in the autonomy it was granted for enrolling its own students for post graduate programmes in the University. To provide specialized training in the field of finance the Department of Financial Studies was carved out of the Department of Commerce in 1987 and the two moved together out of the Faculty of Social Sciences to become Faculty of Commerce and Business which is the youngest faculty of the University. Master of Commerce (M.Com.)
The Department runs the prime curse of Master of Commerce for which the department was established in 1967. This is one of the prestigious courses in the country. The Alumni of this course are well placed in business, academics and administration in the country and abroad. The programme is well received in the industry and for years had been serving the needs of managerial cadre in business and industry. The course serves the needs of academics as well and prepares students for research and teaching in business studies
Master of International Business (MIB)
The Department of Commerce started a one-year full-time Post-graduate Diploma in International Marketing (PGDIM) in the year 1985-86. This programme was well received by trade and industry. The feedback received from such organisations as well as the alumni prompted the Department to introduce full time two-year Master’s programme in International Business (MIB) laying special emphasis on aspects of international business operations including global marketing and international financial management.
The main objective of the programme is to develop candidates suitable for entry level managerial positions in the field of international business management. The course has been designed in a manner so that the students gain an in-depth knowledge and analytical skills which will enable them to efficiently and effectively carry out various marketing and international business operations of an organisation in the emerging globally environment.
Master of Human Resource and Organisational Development (MHROD)
The Master of Human Resource and Organisational Development (MHROD) programme of the Department of Commerce has been designed to cater to the growing needs of industry and business for professionally qualified young man and women in the area of Human Resource and Organisational Development.
