PREAMBLE The 'Department of Placement and Training' was organized with the very First batch of our Engineering Students, moving into their Third year of Studies, in 1998. While conceptualizing, formulating and establishing the Department, 'Creation of Excellent Career Path ways' for Student Community, either 'through Placement or Guidance for Entrepreneurship or through Higher Studies' was taken as the 'Ultimate Objective'. Relevant Governing Factors are broadly: • Development Tools for Entrepreneurship and for Path Finders * The Growing Challenges and intense Competition for Placement in Companies of Repute, in India and Abroad * The need for developing present day culture of “Work Smart” and Abilities to navigate the World * Training and Confidence Building measures, by improving upon the student's Soft Skills along with their knowledge Base and Technical Expertise * Regular Practice in Resume Writing and Cover letters, Debates and Competitions, Group Discussions and Mock-interviews, with the help of Experts in the field. * Intense Interaction and Development of 'Strong and long lasting Relationship' with Industries of Repute through Academic 'Contributions and Services' to Industries from the all Departments of the College * Organization of a suitable Infrastructure, Support facilities and Manpower- with Abilities and Aptitude, for Training and Placement Wing and with special reference to Industry -Institute Interaction, Project Consultancy and for Campus Interviews. * Identification of the Aptitude for Higher studies with the aim to support, guide and promote Student's Interests. Our Goals stem out of such considerations. As of today, "PLACEMENT AND TRAINING DEPARTMENT WITH ITS INDUSTRY INTERACTION CELL" functions as the NODAL AGENCY by undertaking all these Activities at our College and provides the necessary Interface and Coordination between various Departments of our College and Industries and External Agencies. OUR VISION * To emerge as an eminent Institution at the National Level by developing 'Entrepreneurs of the future' apart from providing appropriate placement and career pathways for our students by: * To Secure the future for 100% of our students, either by placement in industries of repute / guide them for entrepreneurship or pursue higher studies and support the 'student community' in all its endeavours. * To continuously assess potentials for career or academic opportunities for our students and launch them in chosen path. * To provide human resources of world class excellence, quality and ethics to the industries in India and abroad and stand up to their expectations and * To render immense and valuable services to Industries through project consultancy and special assignments. OUR MISSION * To make scholarly efforts in awakening the young minds, discovering and developing their talents and personality through dedication and commitment to excellence and innovative instructional methods. * To transform the personality of 10+2 students and engineer them to a bright future through development of communication skills, analytical skills, inter- personal skills, organizational skills and core-competence through counseling and confidence - building measures. * To produce true professionals, path finders, managers and intellectuals with flair for higher studies and entrepreneurship, who through their performance and significant contributions, will bring laurels and reputation to the 'Alma mater'. * To make the Department vibrant and build coalitions, communications and lasting relationships with Industries of repute and Academic Institutions for higher learning. * To organize center of activities for human resource development and management and make critical contributions in areas of emphasis and demonstrate a high level of competence in placement activities and contributions to industries. * To introduce pioneering programs in the Department that will embrace heritage and values to the Institution for realizing its objectives as a premier Institution. OUR GOALS * To provide career pathways for all our students by developing them as Entrepreneurs or providing placement or guiding them for higher studies and for attaining excellence in their chosen career. * To empower students by: • Imparting quality education and appropriate skill sets. • Making exciting changes in traditional concepts. * Effect advancement to teaching and learning and discover new layers of knowledge and skill, that are relevant for success in profession and in life. * To build confidence, core-competence, interpersonal skills, soft skills and right attitude leading to professional ethics and abilities to navigate the world. * To instill and sustain in students, flair for technical and professional writing and oral communication through a well structured arrangement. * To create through brilliance, dedication, inspiration and effectiveness, an environment, which is conducive for acquisition of skills. * To take inter- disciplinary initiatives and organise a wide array of in-house programs for: • The intellectual exchange and development of ideas for 'industry-institute interaction' and explore 'opportunities for higher learning'. • Confidence building and personality development programs for the students in close coordination with Training cell. • Development of abilities to effectively express with clarity in group discussions and for improving upon performance of students in interviews; and thus secure excellent placement in Companies of repute. * To enlarge and spread the net-working with Industries, meet their expectations and maximise career opportunities for the students. * To provide the 'right job for the right man' and ' vice-versa' and realise 'productivity enhancement' for both the individual and the industries. * To continuously assess topics and guide the students for pursuing higher studies and the choice of the Institution. INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES The Training and Placement Department, with its Office for HOD, Industry Interaction Cell and the Offices for the Assistant Professor/ Student Affairs, the Placement Executive and the Office staff, is housed in the heart of the Campus, to provide easy reach for the Industries, Faculty and Students. The Office with its Modern Facilities, Internet and Software provides the support for the efficient organization and running of the Department; the Faculty and Technical Staff are well trained in the operations of the Department for Campus Interviews and in organizing the Developmental Programs for the students and faculty. FACULTY PROFILE Mr. V.ChandraSekar – Professor & Head – Placement & Training : • • Experience of over two decades in Academics , along with numerous visits to Small, Medium and Large Industries in the country, with a strong sense of commitment to equip the students of the College, with necessary skills, expected by Industries. Dr. Prasanna Sivanandam – Asst. Professor (Student Affairs): • Doctorate qualification in Psychology • 5 years of experience; heading the Training Wing of the Department, to provide necessary Training as well as Counseling. Placement Coordinators from each and every Department and Technical Staff of the Department are well trained. Staff Support and Services are rendered by the Department, Main Office and the Personnel of the Department concerned when specifically required. STUDENT COUNSELLING AND EMPOWERMENT This Activity is our Thrust Area and our Objective is “To discover and develop Skills and Abilities in Students to face the challenging environment and focus on their Layers of Strength: Emotional, Academic, Professional and Social”. WORKING ARRANGEMENT AND METHODOLOGIES FOR COUNSELING AND TRAINING i] COUNSELLING CENTRE On the basis of a Reference from class coordinators of the Department concerned, this 'Centre' undertakes Counseling to supplement the 'Department Counselling'. Generally unresolved Issues come up and these are due to plurality of Causes, such as Depression, Impact of Society, Environment, Poor Academic performance, Behavioural problems and extreme reasons for lack of attendance. ii] TIME SLOT Requisite time has been adequately provided every day, catering to the entire Spectrum of Demands of Students, Faculty and Parents iii] CATEGORIES OF PROBLEMS Severity of Syllabus, Teaching Methodologies, Lack of Confidence and Motivation, Lack of Skills, Time Management, Tools for Acquiring Skill sets and Abilities are the issues focused-on for providing special attention to students individually or collectively. iv] COUNSELLING COMMITTEE This committee has been constituted, with the assistance of the students from all Departments to coordinate and consolidate, all common Proposals so as to further the Cause of Education and Placement and also promote the interests of students. v] CONFIDENCE BUILDING AND TRAINING For successful placement of students, Training activities provide the Core-Competence and also develop the requisite strength. Systematic and Structured Programs are conducted from the very first year onwards. The number of sessions and modules vary from year to year. The Training activities are conducted by pooling in our own internal Resources of Staff from Department of MBA and capable and willing Placement Coordinators of all Departments. This focused Activity is conducted systematically by including and Scheduling Training, in the Regular Time Table itself every week. FOR THE PRE-FINAL AND FINAL YEAR STUDENTS Besides the above initiatives, Professionals, Experts and Specialists in the Field are invited to highlight on Current Trends, to augment and intensify our efforts for Training and Guidance to our Senior Students. Thus the Centre, in association with 'Department Student Counselors' and External Experts , provides Psychological and Mental Support, Confidence and Guidance to Students for their development. Depending upon the severity of the Issue, Stressful Environment, Parental or Societal Expectations and Competition, optimum solutions to empower, cope and overcome the situation, are formulated, under the guidance of Concerned Faculty/ Head of Department/ Principal/ Management. Such consistent, Constructive and Enduring Efforts, invariably echo satisfaction in the minds of Students, Faculty and also the Parents . Progress is being steadily monitored every month, directly and through the concerned Counselors, who remain constant throughout the Course. The holistic development of student, by fostering positive, emotional and academic Advancements, enables realisation of our Objectives in PLACEMENT. This sense of fulfillment gives us the Inspiration, in the Institution, as a whole. This is the Strength of our Department. CAMPUS INTERVIEW ACTIVITIES The Placement Department, on its own and / or in association with SRM ENGINEERING COLLEGE / OTHER LEADING INSTITUTION[S], maintains a very close Interaction and Coordination with Industries to assess Career Opportunities for our Students. Apart from Networking, Communications, Correspondence and Personal Meetings, well organised Campaigns are held to project our Strengths and create job opportunities. In a Structured Manner, Resumes are Prepared in Electronic format and in conventional Forms and kept ready in Order to make them available for General and Specific Needs of the Industries. Through several preparations, including Group Discussions and Mock Interviews, students are enabled to present themselves successfully in the Campus Interviews. PLACEMENT Each year, a greater percentage of our students are placed in reputed organizations like TCS, Infosys, Caritor, Bilasoft, L & T Infotech, Hewlett Packard, iNautix Technologies Pvt. Ltd., iGate Global Solutions Ltd., DSL Software Ltd. and Satyam Computers. INDUSTRY INSTITUTE INTERACTION CELL (I I I CELL) Based on the suggestion of Government of India and the ANNA UNIVERSITY , the College has formalised the functioning of the 'already working Industry Interaction Cell', under Placement Department, in the year 2003. Following are the Objectives: * To extend Technical and Project consultancy services by undertaking Research and Development Programmes for Industries and Institutions. * To establish continuous and long standing Relationship with Industries and Research Establishments through MOUs and thus contribute towards Industrial Development. * To provide Technical Training for 'staff and personnel of Industries' for mutual benefit * To arrange Training for EEC Staff / Students in Industry and secure Industrial Training, Projects and ultimately leading to excellent Placement. List of some of the Prominent Industries to whom Consultancy Services were provided with the assistance of the Department concerned, over the past two years: • Defence Research and Development Laboratories. • Tecumseh Private Ltd, Hyderabad . • TVS Sundaram Clayton, Chennai. • Combat Vehicle Research and Development Establishment, Chennai. • Kothari Industries, Chennai. CAREER GUIDANCE Pursuit of Higher Studies Apart from encouraging students for Entrepreneurship and placement, the Department identifies the Aptitudes of the Students for Higher Studies; accordingly, the Department arranges 'Guidance' through Lectures by eminent personalities so as to assist the students in making their right choice regarding the Subjects, Courses and Universities for Higher Studies, both in India and abroad. This is a well structured Support System for pursuing Higher Studies. PUBLICATIONS BY OUR STAFF Dr.Prasanna Sivanandam, Asst. Professor - Student Affairs, published books in HR titled: • Managing Men • Principles of Management and iii. Professional Ethics . Other contributions • Conducted sessions on learning for Teachers from various Institutions in the Country at Madras Management Association. • Conducted workshops on parenting and Stress Management for employees of Blue Chip Companies like Cognizant Technologies, Polaris, Ford etc. • Had been a regular Guest consultant for Britannia Industries Limited. Papers presented • “Issues and Concerns in Outsourcing Human Resource” at SRM Arts & Science College in the National Seminar on “Emerging Opportunities in Business Outsourcing”. • “Rural Marketing challenges and Opportunities” at Vellore Institute of Technology in the National Seminar on “Emerging Trends and Challenges in Rural Marketing”. OUR FUTURE PLANS * To further intensify the Activities to reach every student of this College from the very First Year and securing a bright future and Career pathways for 100% of Students. * To initiate new Techniques in developing the students to face modern methods of Personality Tests and Interviews. * To further upgrade the Quality of Guest lecturers on current Topics and Emerging Trends, so as to Prepare our Students as Entrepreneurs and Professionals for the Global Market. * To make the Department vibrant and a Hub for 'Entrepreneurship' and 'Placement'. * To contribute to the growth of the Institution as an eminent 'Resource Centre for providing True- Professionals' and thus meet the expectations of the Industries at International Level.
