Gauhati University - Gauhati University, Courses, Admissions, Campus, Results, Alumni, Fees, Eligibility, Studies, Exams, The birth of the present Gauhati University Publication Department can be traced to the National Policy of Education 7th October 1968, which emphasized the need for adopting Indian languages as the medium of instruction at the University stage.

History
As per guideline of the Union Government, a co-ordination committee at the state level under the chairmanship of the Education Minister was set up together with a co-ordination committee in the University level under the chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor of respective universities. As a result, the Gauhati University co-ordination committee for production of textbooks in the regional language was set up under the guidance of the State (Assam) co-ordination committee 1969. This office was known as Gauhati University Co-ordination Committee for production of textbook in the regional language.

In 1986, the University Publication Unit was amalgamated with the Gauhati University Co-ordination Committee for production of textbooks, which was renamed as the GUPD.

Administration
Since Last several years the Department has been funded by the GU authority. Prior to this, Gauhati University Co-ordination Committee for production of textbook in the regional language was run by the Central Govt. till 1982. At present the office is running under direct control of GU Publication Advisory Committee headed by the Vice Chancellor (Chairman) is the policy making body of this establishment. The Secretary is the Controlling officer and the Registrar, GU is the Administrative head. The cell has not received any grant from State Govt. for Administrative expenses, infrastructure, etc.

It has adequate staff strength and its own composite building and a huge godown. Central Grant has been used for publishing books.

Facilities & assets
The cell has three godowns wherein a large number of books were stored. Printing machine and its composing materials are lying without use. It has also a composing building wherein office, godown, sales counter, and printing unit are housed. All facilities are not available in connection with the publication works.
