The University began by offering two academic programmes in 1987, i.e., Diploma in Management and Diploma in Distance Education, with a strength of 4,528 students.
Today, it serves the educational aspirations of over 4 million students in India and 36 other countries through 21 Schools of Studies and a network of 67 regional centres, around 3,000 learner support centres and 67 overseas centres. The University offers about 490 certificate, diploma, degree and doctoral programmes, with a strength of nearly 420 faculty members and academic staff at the headquarters and regional centres and about 36,000 academic counsellors from conventional institutions of higher learning, professional organisations, and industry among others.

Eligibility:
An MPhil or an MSc degree in Life Science or related area from a university or a recognised institution of higher learning. The admission is based on an entrance test and an interview. The following categories of students are exempted from the entrance test .
Students have to complete the course work worth 32 credits before registering for the Ph.D. programme. Those with an M Phil degree are exempted from the course work. Students with an MPhil degree are required to present a PhD proposal which will be approved by the Doctoral Committee. They will be registered for the PhD Programme only if the proposal is approved by the Doctoral Committee.

The Entrance Test will be held on 18.8.2013 Hall tickets will be provided to the candidates before 10 days of the Entrance Test. In case of non-receipt of Hall Tickets 3 days before the date of Entrance Test, candidates can download Hall Ticket from IGNOU website and report to the Examination Centre for appearing in the Entrance Test.
