After 1947, the Government of independent India focused on the development of indigenous science and technology. As a technology base was being created, it became clear that the country needed to simultaneously augment management talent and resources. A response that lead to the creation of the Indian Institutes of Management in the country. The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore was established in 1973.

PGP IN MANAGEMENT (PGPM)
The two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) is the flagship programme of the Institute. it is designed to enable students to acquire the skills and capabilities that will enable them to reach responsible Global positions in management.
The number of applicants admitted to this programme is limited to around 240. the Programme revolves around the principle that world-class business leaders are not mass-produced; they are nurtured and developed with personalised care and attention, in small work groups and teams, and in a practical, application-oriented user-friendly environment.
The programme lays the foundation for conceptual and analytical reasoning, and gives the students an insight into the dynamics of the business environment.

PGP in Public Policy and Management (PGPPM)
The two-year Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy and Management (PGPPM) of Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has entered its sixth year. Catalyzed by the Government of India and UNDP in the year 2002, the PGPPM was conceived as a pioneering programme in public policy designed by India ’s leading business school. The programme presents an innovative and socially relevant approach to public policy, besides being power packed with path breaking insights about winning policy making and management strategies. Eminent academicians and practitioners from IIMB and overseas share inputs on how to mobilize participants’ intangible assets - talent, knowledge, relationship and reputation to draw up a coherent strategy to meet the needs of the emerging global and national arenas
