Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati , the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995.
At present the Institute has eleven departments covering all the major engineering and science disciplines, offering B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up the necessary infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments
IIT Guwahati's campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning. While the campus construction programme will terminate at the end of the tenth five year plan, students' hostels, faculty and staff quarters, and a guest house have already been built.

LIBRARY
The Central Library, one of the important central facilities of the Institute, currently has 96,000 volumes, including textbooks, reference books, conference proceedings, back volumes, standards, and non-book material such as CD-ROMs, audio tapes, video tapes, slides. The Library also subscribes to about 414 current periodicals.
All operations of the Library are automated with the help of an integrated library software package. The database for the entire collection has been created and available through On-Line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) to the users via campus network. Now this facility is also available through Institute's Intranet as a Web enabled OPAC.
Central Library being a member of INDEST Consortium (Indian National Digital Library in Science and Technology Consortium), under the aegis of the MHRD, provides online access to few important science & engineering abstracting database services, such as COMPENDEX & INSPEC, MathSciNet, SciFinder Scholar, Web of Science etc and several full-text journals and Indian Standards. The Central Library Intranet Page provides the IP based online accesses to these resources.
The Training & Placement Cell is well equipped with excellent infrastructure to support each and every stage of the placement processes in the campus. The pre-placement talks rooms, group discussion rooms are equipped with LCD projectors, PCs and audio-video facilities. The T & P Cell has sufficient number of interview rooms.
The Computer Centre is solely responsible for keeping the Electronic Communication & Computation related facilities available to each and every member of IIT Guwahati. The services provided by the Computer Centre includes:
* Installation & Maintenance of Servers for:
o Internet Access.
o E-mailing Facilities.
o Computation Facilities.
* Management & upkeep of the Official IITG & Intranet Web Page.
* Management of the institute telephone exchange.
* Management of the Centralized Computer Lab accessible to all the students of the institute as well as to other local researchers/students.
* Maintaining the huge campus network, consisting about 10,000 nodes.
* Providing technical assistance to the Academic Institutes and Organizations in and around Guwahati.
* Providing facilities to the Students who come from various academic institutes from all over the world for their Short-term Courses, Project Work, Summer Training etc.
* Provides & maintains the PCs of the Faculty & Staff members.
These facilities are constantly upgraded to meet the evolving standards of IT. The Computer Centre remains open for Sixteen hours(16) (9:00 AM to 1:00AM) a day and the students visit the Centre for their routine computing tasks. Many departments use the facilities of the Computer Centre to conduct their practical classes & examinations.
The Computer Centre also manages the IITG LAN, IITG Telephone Exchange and provide support to the users. The campus LAN has been extended to all the hostels. The Network connectivity to the residences have been extended using ADSL technology. New hardware and software are procured on a regular basis so as to provide a state of the art computing facility to the IITG family. The resource of the centre is also availed by students/researchers of other institutions in and around Guwahati.
Hostel & accomodation:
IITG guesthouse has all modern facilities. All the rooms are air-conditioned and have Internet connectivity. We charge a nominal amount from guests on official visits. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes are available on order. Food bills are to be completely borne by the guests.
