LIBRARY
“ A great book is the previous life blood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life” –– John Milton
"We in this college are acutely aware of the need of a very good library, which may serve both students and staff. Few things can equal the lasting pleasure of a good book carefully read, and few things can have greater influences in moulding character, and through character even destiny itself’
–– Extract from the Principal’s report 1958-1959. At that point the Library had a collection of 6,600 books.)
LSR’s superbly equipped, expertly maintained and newly refurbished Library with a computerized user friendly data filing system functions as an invaluable aid to every aspiring scholar. The Library employs th LIBSYS computerised library management system and several terminals are provided for students and faculty to search for books/research material online.
It boasts of an impressive stock of over one lakh books. It also subscribes to a range of more than 150 national and international journals, making it one of the largest selections in the University of Delhi. The general library with its open-rack system, spacious reading room and reference section provides an atmosphere conducive to the exhilaration of mental discovery. Students are encouraged to become sagacious users of the library. The library offers audio and video facilities and attempts to cater to the needs of our visually challenged students as well.
The ever-efficient Library staff are available to assist students to find material for their Projects and Research. The library, as a final year student puts it, is really well equipped with all kinds of books, may it be novels, course books, magazines or newspapers.
Web Junction
Internet access is provided free of cost to all students and faculty at Web Junction, the internet facility, which is a part and parcel of the Library. Recently we have added several terminals in the general and reference sections to provide Internet access and connect to the Delhi University network with access to the DU library database.
The library operates in 2 sections
General Section: 8.00a.m–4.30p.m
Reference Section: 8.00a.m.–8.00 p.m.
COMPUTER AND STATISTICS LABORATORY
The College provides a well equipped Computer and Statistics laboratory for students to carry out their innovative and scientific experiments.
The computer laboratory was redesigned in a unique sitting pattern to facilitate imparting of instuctions as well as have freedom of movement between desks for the instructor to assist students individually. All the apparatus and PCs are upgraded to meet the requirements of changing technology and the University syllabi. The laboratories are used by the students who take up Mathematics, Statistics, Commerce and B.A. Programme courses.
AUDITORIUM
The 'Ramakrishna Dalmia Auditorium' first established on 31st January 1991, was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama. LSR takes great pride in hosting the daily assembly, talks by guest speakers, inter-college competitions, other functions such as the annual College day, movie screenings etc.
Commonly known as the “Audi”, it is the space created to display talent, encourage creativity, channel thought and foster communication. It can easily accommodate up to 750 and is extensively used almost every day to host its many activities.
The sound system includes a 12-channel mixer and a studio master. The light room can operate almost100 lights at the same time with the help of its electronic dimmer. The 40 × 60 ft stage has an automatic main curtain and two other curtains. There are also 16mm and digital video projectors, which can screen films and presentations as and when required.
We do not hesitate in saying that it is indeed one of the best auditoriums in Delhi University.
BANK
An extension branch of the Punjab National Bank, is located within college premises and is a great asset. All students especially the Residence Hall students can create a personal account for themselves.
The Bank staff often obliges us by extending their working hours for the convenience of the staff and the students. The Accounts Section, which has to regularly deposit wages of teaching and non-teaching staff, finds this facility very convenient.
It is also extremely useful for societies and associations to manage their finances.
BOOKSTORE
A bookstore is an essential requirement for any college where academic work is being undertaken. Recognizing the importance of this fact, the college bookshop was established within the college premises almost 40 years ago. It offers general stationery, the required course books, reference books, etc. which can be bought at a 10% discount. Books can also be ordered in and procured within two days and this facility is extended to the Library.
LSR CAFE
The Cafe at LSR is indeed the most popular haunt for some very obvious reasons. Great food at affordable prices in a good ambience make the cafe the most frequently visited place in the college (sometimes more than all classrooms put together). It is currently run in collaboration with Pat-a-Cake, a leading confectionery maker.
The cafe at LSR offers a wide range of items that cater to every taste from South India to continental cuisine. There is absolutely no doubt that LSR has the BEST Cafeteria in Delhi University.
COUNSELLING CELL
The transition between school, college and into a career-oriented environment can lead to stress. Recognising the importance of this fact, LSR offers counselling to all its students in an attempt to help the individual cope with the demands of a complex society and find her place in it. The College counsellor, Dr. Priti Dhawan, Faculty Member, Department of Psychology, is non-judgmental and unbiased, and opens her doors to anyone who would like to speak to her. Her counselling sessions are indeed very interactive and unrestrained, giving the students ample space to express themselves. These sessions encourage the individual to gain insight into her persona; narrowing the gap, which exists between capabilities and aspirations.
THE COLLEGE GARDENS
The College gardens with her velvet lawns, assorted plants, flowers and trees, provide the ideal environment for contemplation. LSR, assisted by dedicated gardeners, has won the prestigious “University Green Cup” for 9 years running and the gardens are thus a source of great pride. On joining LSR, every student is encouraged to plant and nurture a tree. The environment club, Prakriti, offers a unique opportunity for aesthetic satisfaction to those interested in gardening and conservation. While the unwritten law is to stay off the front lawns, the wide stretches of the back lawns, the courtyard and the rock gardens, are always accessible. They are especially inviting in the winter, when the sun glistens on the moist grass.
LSR MEDICAL CENTRE
The LSR Medical Centre or more commonly known as the Med Room provides basic first aid facilities. The nurse is always available during college hours to attend to both students and staff members. The Med Room provides a weighing machine as well as a blood pressure machine. LSR believes in not only imparting education to its students but to ensure that every student and the members of its staff are taken care of.
ON CAMPUS HOUSING
The LSR Residence Hall, located west of the main college building, is home to 300 bright and enthusiastic students. The residents from diverse backgrounds of various parts of the country and other foreign lands, give it an eclectic ethos that serves only to strengthen it. The Hostel is among the largest hostels in DU, offering the basic amenities to provide maximum opportunity for growth and self-empowerment.
The Residence Hall is the nucleus of a harmonious community environment. It has a longstanding tradition of celebrating multi-cultural and ethno-religious diversity. With its bright common room, beautiful lawn, visitor’s lounge and facilities for recreation, its welcoming living quarters and fine cuisine, the Residence Hall is a home away from home.
It seeks to continuously provide the students with modern amenities. Internet access is available for the exclusive use of the residents. The Residence Hall offers an extensive in-house library as well as medical facilities for the students. The Speakers’ Forum regularly invites distinguished personalities to interact with residents. Several in-house clubs keep the Residence Hall humming with activity round the year.
The College Cafe is located just outside the gate of the Residence Hall.
PCO
A steel grey structure stands there huddled with girls chit-chatting, giggling, yelling or just banging on the glass door asking someone to hurry up. Then one of them yells from inside hey guys, will you keep quiet? I can't hear a word. Well yes, here we are talking about our very own PCO, which was started in 1998 with a local connection and after a year it got equipped with STD & ISD facilities. Master Somesh Sharma who is indeed responsible, diligent and meticulous operates this PCO, which is also equipped with a Photostatting machine.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION/SPORTS
Students participate in a wide range of sports activities like Chess, Gymnastics, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Basket Ball, Shooting, Athletics, Badminton, Martial Arts, Golf, Judo, Volley Ball and the Equestrian field. Members of the NSO win a number of prestigious inter college trophies and medals and often represent the University of Delhi at National Meets.
Our students have represented the nation at international events and won laurels. LSR is the only College in the University to host an Annual Sports Meet as well as an Annual Cross Country Run that aids in creating awareness about a social theme.
