Mahatma Gandhi University-School of Distance Education, Kottayam was established in 1983 and inaugurated by His Excellency the President of India on 26th October 1983. It was subsequently been granted full recognition by the University Grants Commission. It is a member of both the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The headquarters of the University is at Priyadarshini Hills, about 12 kms away from Kottayam town. The University has 25 teaching and research departments, 11 University Colleges of Teaching Education, 26 regional centers, 3 study centers, 5 information centers and 49 Off Campus Academic Centers. There are 108 colleges affiliated to the University. University Library was the first in the country to be fully automated as stipulated by U.G.C.
School of Distance Education, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam is happy to extend its educational service program through different off campus academic centers of the University in India and abroad.

School of Distance Education provides opportunity for higher education to a large segment of the population, with a view to promoting the educational well-being of the community.
The following Guidelines are to be adopted in the conduct of Undergraduate and Post Graduate Courses commencing at the Off-Campus Academic Centres of the School of Distance Education, Mahatma Gandhi University from 2001.
1. Eligibility for Admission: All Courses at the Off Campus Academic Centres of the School of Distance Education will be governed by the Rules for Private registration in force at Mahatma Gandhi University. (This is applicable to all subjects including those for which no Private registration is offered at present).
