Mar Theophilus Training College owes its existence to the farsighted vision of the late Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios of Trivandrum. It is one of the Malankara Catholic colleges established and administered by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Trivandrum, in accordance with the rights of the minority community guaranteed in the constitution of India.
His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, major Archbishop of Trivandrum is the patron to the college. His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thomas, Aux. Bishop of Trivandrum and Apostolic Visitator to North America and Europe, is the co-patron of the college. The college functions under the effiecient support of very Rev. Msgr. James Paravila and very Rev. Msgr. Samuel Kattukallil the Vicar Generals of the Archdiocese of Trivandrum.
The college started functioning in 1956 as an affiliated College to the university of Kerala on the Bethany Hills. Later the management identified a new site for the college and a full fledged college was constructed with the required infrastructure facilities. Prof. J.Y. Thampi Haris was the first Principal of the college for five years. Great personalities poineered the history of this institution. Fr. Jose Mathew, Fr. George Mootheril, Sr. Stanislaus SIC, Smt. Susan Joseph, Smt. Mary Mathew Rev Dr. (Sr) Sbeeha SIC and Rev. Fr. Jose Konnath were served as principals. At present Rev. Sr.(Dr.) Mercykutty functions as the principal. As a teacher education institution the college offers B.Ed. Degree Course in English, Malayalam, Mathematics, Natural Science, Physical Science and Social Science.
During the last 50 years of its existence, the college has made tremendous progress in setting up a good library and other infrastructure facilities. In order to comply with the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) norms, the management started the construction of a new building on 30th June 1998 with all the modern physical infrastructure and other facilities like computer lab, psychology lab, educational technology lab, Science lab, work experience lab, language labs etc, to achieve the status of a center of excellence. With the inauguration of the new building and the labs on 1st March 2001, MTT college became the first college in the University of Kerala and in Kerala State with all the specifications set by the NCTE council. The NCTE expert team members visited the college and recorded their appreciation regarding the infrastructure and academic excellence of the college. The M. Ed. course was newly started in 2005 - 06.
At present the college has 9 permanent faculty members and three members in the self financing M. Ed. faculty of which seven have doctoral degrees in education and all others are persuing their research leading Ph. D. There are 13 members in the non-teaching faculty. The college also has 3 guest faculty in the non-teaching stream. The college has always secured an average pass percentage of above 98 in the university examination throughtout the 51 years of its yeomen service.
The National Assessment & Accreditation council (NAAC) awarded the college with an ‘A’ Grade for its excellence. The college is working towards reaccreditation and has geared up for the post accreditation planning and implementation.
