The University of Calicut has a very interesting historical background. It is considered as the largest University in Kerala as of now. However, it has been a part of Kerala University before the establishment. Calicut University started with few departments and academic branches which were operating under Kerala University previously. Here is a brief historical account for the Calicut University:
The Kerala University in India was the first educational organization set up in Kerala which would monitor the teachings and supervise the examinations. The Government decided to bifurcate it with an Act for Calicut University. It started with four post-graduate departments and 54 colleges in the area of northern Kerala. Soon, it acquired first position in the educational organizations in the state. Today, it monitors around 350 colleges and operates around 25 post graduate departments. Since its establishment in the year 1968, the University has progressed gradually towards excellence.
The University operates various departments till post-graduate level of education. It also supervises around 250 collages under it. The departments can be listed as below:

2. Life Sciences
3. Botany and Zoology
4. Physics and Chemistry
5. Commerce and Social sciences
6. Languages like English, Malayalam, Sanskrit, Hindi and Russian
The University has made a lot of innovative changes in the curriculum and teaching methods. It has adopted new technology and inventions in the education field. Following are some facilities that the University provides for the students:

1. CHMK Library
The University boasts of a well-equipped library which holds huge collection of books on various subjects. The library was famous as the CalicutUniversity library. However, later it was renamed after C.H.Mohammed Koya, who was the Minister of Education in Kerala state. The books range from psychology to medical sciences. Around 96 thousand books and subscription of 218 journals are available in the library. It is fully automated and first such university library in Kerala. It is situated at Thenhippalam. It also includes an advanced study centre.
2. Central Ranking Process
The centralized ranking process has been initiated by the CalicutUniversity in 2013. It has started online application submission format in all of its colleges and schools and educational institutes that operate under this university. A candidate desiring an admission in the CalicutUniversity will have to submit an application in the centralized database. He or she will be provided with a rank, which will determine the college allocated to him/her. This is regarded as simple, effective and inexpensive process for the admission. The student can typically choose from variety of colleges available.
In this way, CalicutUniversity has been striving hard to come up with new-age solutions for the students which would make education simple and interesting. It has participated in the educational movement in India and will continue performing its role in it.
