OUR MISSION:
Management education and its demand in the liberalized economy are undergoing a rapid transformation. With a limited number of institutions offering a management program to an elite few in early eighties to a management institute in every nook and corner of the country, the demand for the qualification is getting diluted day by day. Traditionally the management institutes all over India offered conventional specializations as in Finance, HR, Marketing and Production Management. However with the liberalization of economy and new industry sectors especially in the service domain gaining prominence, newer specialization subjects like insurance, retail and BPO management have started becoming popular amongst young students. While majority of the management institutes are cashing in on the new found interest of the students in unconventional areas, there isn’t anything unique that they have to offer especially in terms of the curriculum or the delivery of education. This in turn leaves the student disillusioned about the whole program and limited subject knowledge that could be easily applied in their jobs.
One of the major concerns that many distance education management institutes have today is an increasing number of students dropping out of the course within a year. While students enthusiastically take up the first semester of the program with almost 80-90% students taking the examination as per schedule, the numbers start dwindling to 50-60% in the second semester to a situation where only 20-25% students completing the program in the scheduled duration. Of the many reasons that students cite in dropping out of the course is the lack of time in studying for the course amidst grueling work schedules. On the whole this isn’t an encouraging scenario for the management institutes as their graduates fail to make a significant impact in their organizations thereby keeping the recruiters disinterested in distance MBA.
OUR VISION:
Management education is relatively an urban phenomenon. With over 1700 institutions in India offering business management education mostly situated in metro locations and the job opportunities available in cities only, students residing in semi-urban and rural areas are at a major disadvantage. While some of them do migrate to cities chasing their corporate dream, management education still remains a distant reality for many. Another hurdle facing the institutes located in semi-urban areas is the apprehension of many corporate organizations willing to reach out to these locations for campus placements further discouraging the students. The saturation in the urban job market and the businesses on the whole many companies are now looking to reach out to the interiors. Insurance sector for instance has reached its saturation in the urban market however only 30% of the rural population is covered. Other industry sectors such as BPOs and Logistics too find it lucrative to expand in the rural and semi-urban market. The talent acquisition teams within these companies are almost certain to face a herculean task to attract and retain talent to work in rural locations. What is interesting to note is that even reverse migration seems to be almost impossible as a student after having investing money and time in settling down in metro cities is apprehensive about going back to his hometown for the fear of a social backlash. Affordability of the management program is also another important factor that needs a mention here. Majority of the students from the rural backgrounds are unable to pay for the huge cost of education and living in the metro cities. Although educational loans are available from almost all the nationalized banks in India, repayment of loans out of their nominal salaries is certainly difficult
Distance education therefore offers a plausible solution to the semi-urban dilemma. With our programs being affordable and within the budgets of a common man, OET can be the right source for acquiring management education for our students without having to leave their homes. The future of business in India definitely lies in its villages and there are justifiable reasons for it. Increased purchasing power, access to cheap labor and reduced operational costs has prompted many businesses to look to semi-urban India for a solution for its decreasing profits year after year. The prospect of a knowledgeable work force with an in-depth understanding of market is indeed very exciting.
